Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a major public
health concern in the United States today. Brain
injury may impair a person's ability to function
in family, social and work environments. The
attorneys at Brett & Coats know the
devastation that brain injuries can cause. While
some TBI victims make a full recovery, others
face dramatic changes in basic brain function or
personality. Our firm is proud of our successful
record of helping the victims of traumatic brain
injury.
Our goal is to help clients receive prompt, fair
and just compensation for their injuries.
WHAT IS A TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY
A TBI is caused by a violent physical force that
impacts the brain and produces a diminished or
altered state of consciousness. The force causes
the brain to move within the skull and sometimes
breaks the skull to directly harm the brain.
Bruising, tearing and swelling can occur from
the rotation of the brain against the skull. Our
brain has tremendous responsibility for
controlling our thought process, voluntary
movements and other important aspects of our
physical and emotional well-being. Injury to any
one area of the brain can result in permanent
disability, seizures, memory loss, headaches,
loss of taste or smell, double vision, speech
impairments, anxiety, behavioral problems and
depression. Some TBI victims' memory impairment
can lead to a tragic loss of self and identity.
The leading causes of TBI include motor vehicle
incidents, falls, acts of violence and sports
injuries. Head injuries fall into one or several
categories:
- Diffuse
Axonal Injuries are caused by the
shaking or strong rotation of the head.
- Concussions
occur when the brain receives trauma from an
impact or violent change in momentum or
movement.
- Coup-Contrecoup
refers to bruises that occur to the brain
both on the side of an impact and on the
side of the brain directly opposite the
impact, when the brain is slammed into the
opposite side of the skull.
- Recurrent
Traumatic Brain Injury or Second Impact
Syndrome occurs prior to the healing of a
previous traumatic brain injury.
- Penetration
Injuries result from a bullet, knife or
other sharp object forcing hair, skin and
bone into the brain.
- Comas
are prolonged periods of unconsciousness
where there is no awareness of self or the
environment.
According to the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
there are an estimated 5.3 million Americans
living with the disabilities associated with
traumatic brain injuries.
